1 Around that time, Yahudah (Judah) left his brothers and went to stay with an Adullamite man named Chirah (Hirah). 2 There Yahudah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua (Shua). He married her and slept with her. 3 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er (Er). 4 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan (Onan). 5 She gave birth to yet another son and named him Shelah (Shelah). Yahudah was at Kezib (Chezib) when she gave birth to him. 6 Yahudah chose a wife for Er, his firstborn son, and her name was Tamar (Tamar). 7 But Er, Yahudah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahuah (Yah)’s sight, so Yahuah took his life. 8 Then Yahudah said to Onan, "Sleep with yourself brother’s wife and perform yourself duty as a brother-in-law to her. Raise up offspring for yourself brother." 9 But Onan knew that the offspring wouldn't be his own. So whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to avoid providing an heir for his brother. 10 What he did was evil in Yahuah (Yah)’s sight, so He took his life as well. 11 Then Yahudah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Stay as a widow in yourself father’s house until my son Shelah grows up." He said this because he thought, "Otherwise, he might die too, just like his brothers." So Tamar went to live in her father’s house. 14 When Tamar saw that Shelah had grown up but she still hadn't been given to him as a wife, she took off her widow’s clothes. She covered herself with a veil to disguise herself and sat at the entrance to Enaim (Enaim), which is on the road to Timnah (Timnah). 24 About three months later, Yahudah was told, "Yourself daughter-in-law Tamar has acted like a prostitute, and look, she is now pregnant because of it." Yahudah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned!" 25 As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law: "I am pregnant by the man who owns these things. Please look closely," she said. "Whose are these—the signet ring, the cords, and the staff?" 26 Yahudah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I am, because I didn't give her to my son Shelah." And he didn't sleep with her again.
