When Yoseph (Joseph) was seventeen years old, he was tending the flocks with his brothers. He was a young man working alongside the sons of Bilhah (Bilhah) and Zilpah (Zilpah), his father’s wives. Yoseph brought a bad report about them to their father. ³ Now Yisra'el (Israel) loved Yoseph more than all his other children because he was born to him in his old age, and he made him a colorful robe. ⁴ When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and couldn't even say a kind word to him. ⁵ Yoseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more. ⁶ He said to them, "Please listen to this dream I had: ⁷ We were tying bundles of grain in the field. Suddenly, my bundle stood up straight, and your bundles gathered around and bowed down to mine." ⁸ His brothers said to him, "Are yourself really going to reign over us? Will yourself actually rule over us?" So they hated him even more because of his dreams and what he said. ⁹ Then he had another dream and told his brothers about it. "Look," he said, "I’ve had another dream. The sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me." ¹⁰ When he told his father and his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What kind of dream is this? Will yourself mother, yourself brothers, and I actually come and bow down to the ground before yourself?" ¹¹ His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept thinking about what had been said. ¹³ Yisra'el said to Yoseph, "Aren't yourself brothers tending the sheep at Shekem (Shechem)? Come, I’m going to send yourself to them." "I’m ready," Yoseph replied. ¹⁸ They saw him from a distance, and before he reached them, they plotted together to kill him. ¹⁹ They said to each other, "Look, here comes that dreamer! ²⁰ Come on, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these pits. We can say a wild animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams!"
