¹ Yahuah (Yah) said to Yaakov (Jacob), "Get up, go to Beyth-El (Bethel) and live there. Build an altar there to El (God), who appeared to yourself when yourself fled from yourself brother Esav (Esau)." ² Then Yaakov (Jacob) said to his household and to everyone with him, "Get rid of the foreign elohiym (gods) among you. Purify yourselves and change your clothes. ³ Then let's get up and go to Beyth-El (Bethel). I'll build an altar there to El (God), who answered me in my time of distress and was with me on the journey I took." ⁴ So they gave Yaakov (Jacob) all the foreign elohiym (gods) they had and the rings in their ears. Yaakov (Jacob) hid them under the terebinth tree near Shekem (Shechem). ⁵ As they journeyed, a terror from Yahuah (Yah) fell on the cities around them, so they didn't pursue the sons of Yaakov (Jacob). ⁶ Yaakov (Jacob) and all the people with him came to Luz (Luz)—which is Beyth-El (Bethel)—in the land of <span class="ytc-term" data-term="Kena'an" title="Means 'lowland' or 'merchant.' Pronounced: Keh...">Kena'an (Canaan). ⁷ He built an altar there and called the place El-Beyth-El (El-bethel), because Yahuah (Yah) was revealed to him there when he fled from his brother. ⁹ Yahuah (Yah) appeared to Yaakov (Jacob) again after he returned from Paddan Aram (Paddan-aram) and blessed him. ¹⁰ Yahuah (Yah) said to him, "Yourself name is Yaakov (Jacob). Yourself won't be called Yaakov (Jacob) anymore; instead, yourself name will be Yisra'el (Israel)." So He named him Yisra'el (Israel). ¹¹ Yahuah (Yah) said to him, "I am El Shaddai (Almighty). Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a community of nations will come from yourself, and kings will be among yourself descendants. ¹² I'll give the land I gave to Avraham (Abraham) and Yitschaq (Isaac) to yourself, and I'll give this land to yourself descendants after yourself." ¹⁶ They journeyed from Beyth-El (Bethel), and while they were still some distance from Ephrath (Ephrath), Rachel (Rachel) went into labor and had a difficult birth. ¹⁷ During her difficult labor, the midwife said to her, "Don't be afraid; yourself have another son." ¹⁸ As she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni (Ben-oni); but his father named him Binyamin (Benjamin). ¹⁹ Rachel (Rachel) died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (Ephrath)—which is Beyth Lechem (Bethlehem). ²² While Yisra'el (Israel) lived in that land, Re'uven (Reuben) went and slept with his father's concubine, Bilhah (Bilhah), and Yisra'el (Israel) heard about it.
