Genesis (Bere'shiyth) 34
1 Dinah (Dinah), the daughter of Leah (Leah) and Yaakov (Jacob), went out to visit the local women. 2 When Shekem (Shechem), the son of Chamor (Hamor) the Chivviy (Hivite) and prince of the land, saw her, he took her by force, slept with her, and violated her. 3 He became deeply attached to Dinah, Yaakov’s daughter. He loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her. 4 Shekem said to his father Chamor, "Get me this young woman to be my wife." 5 Yaakov heard that Shekem had defiled his daughter Dinah. Since his sons were out in the field with his livestock, Yaakov kept quiet until they returned. 6 Chamor, Shekem’s father, went out to talk with Yaakov. 7 Yaakov’s sons came in from the field as soon as they heard what happened. They were grieved and very angry because Shekem had committed a disgraceful act in Yisra'el (Israel) by sleeping with Yaakov’s daughter—something that should never be done. 8 Chamor spoke with them and said, "My son Shekem deeply desires your daughter. Please, give her to him as a wife. 9 Intermarry with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for you. 10 You can live with us, and the land will be open to you. Settle here, trade in it, and acquire property." 11 Then Shekem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, "Please show me favor. I'll give you whatever you ask of me. 12 No matter how high you set the bride-price and the gift, I'll pay whatever you demand. Just let me marry the young woman." 13 Because Shekem had defiled their sister Dinah, Yaakov’s sons replied to him and his father Chamor deceitfully. 14 They said to them, "We can't do this. We can't give our sister to a man who isn't circumcised, because that would be a disgrace to us. 15 We'll only agree to your request on one condition: you must become like us, and every male among you must be circumcised. 16 If you do that, then we'll give our daughters to you and take your daughters for you. We'll live with you and become one people. 17 But if you won't listen to us and be circumcised, then we'll take our daughter and leave."
